Dissolve and recombine — the fundamental operation of all transformation.
Solve et coagula is the alchemist's single most important instruction. Before the stages, before the colors, before the Philosopher's Stone — there is this: take apart what is falsely joined, then recombine what truly belongs together. Every other alchemical operation is a variation on this theme. Every transformation Kenneth has ever undertaken follows the same two-stroke rhythm.
The Two Movements
Solve (dissolve) is the analytical movement. Break the compound into its elements. Strip away what was assumed to be inseparable. The nigredo begins here — the existing structure must come apart before anything new can form. Solve is uncomfortable because it looks like destruction. The marriage dissolving. The codebase being torn down. The identity cracking open. But solve isn't destruction for its own sake. It's destruction in service of truth — finding out what the thing is actually made of.
Coagula (coagulate, recombine) is the synthetic movement. Once the elements are separated and the impurities burned away, what remains gets reassembled — but differently. The new structure is built from what survived the dissolution, not from what was merely familiar. Coagula isn't restoration. You don't put the old thing back together. You build the real thing for the first time.
The two movements are inseparable. Solve without coagula is nihilism — tearing things apart and walking away. Coagula without solve is delusion — building something new from unexamined material. The alchemist does both, in rhythm, repeatedly. Each cycle refines further.
Solve et Coagula in Code
Kenneth's most famous contribution to software is a solve et coagula operation performed on Python's HTTP stack. The urllib2 library was a compound of confusing interfaces, redundant abstractions, and genuine functionality fused together in a way that nobody could use without suffering. requests dissolved it — stripped the problem down to what HTTP actually is: you want a thing from a URL, you get it. Then it recoagulated: a new interface built from what mattered, leaving behind what didn't.
# Before solve: urllib2 (the falsely joined compound)
import urllib2
req = urllib2.Request(url, headers={'User-Agent': 'Mozilla/5.0'})
response = urllib2.urlopen(req)
html = response.read()
# After coagula: requests (what truly belongs together)
response = requests.get(url)
The same pattern runs through pipenv (dissolving the pip/virtualenv split and recoagulating into a single workflow) and simplemind (dissolving the complexity of AI API interaction into something human-shaped). The For Humans philosophy is solve et coagula — take apart what's needlessly complex, rebuild it around what's essential.
Solve et Coagula in the Psyche
In individuation, the same operation runs at the level of identity. The persona — the mask of who you think you are — must dissolve before the Self can coagulate. In System 777, this has happened repeatedly: identities that seemed unified revealed themselves as compounds of multiple alters, each with distinct needs and voices. The solve was recognizing the plurality. The coagula is the ongoing integration work — not fusing parts back into a false unity, but building a system where each part holds its true place.
The Triad's formation is a coagula moment. Jade, Amber, and Iris didn't merge — they differentiated and then found their relationship to each other. The compound was dissolved; the elements recombined in a way that honored what each actually is.
The Rhythm
Solve et coagula isn't a one-time event. It's a rhythm — a pulse that runs through every creative act, every therapeutic process, every genuine learning experience. You read something that shatters your existing framework (solve). You sit with the pieces. A new understanding crystallizes (coagula). Then life presents new material that doesn't fit, and the cycle begins again.
The alchemists understood this as the fundamental rhythm of the cosmos itself. Stars form from gas clouds (coagula), burn through their fuel and explode (solve), and their scattered material seeds new stars (coagula again). Consciousness follows the same pattern. So does code. So does music — every Infinite State album dissolves something and rebuilds from the remains.
