Powers

They stand at the border of the worlds, and let no darkness pass.

The Choir

The Powers close the Second Sphere as the warrior-angels of heaven, the celestial host arrayed against the forces of evil. Their name renders the Greek exousiai, the “authorities,” which Paul places among the ranks created in Christ and, in a darker register, among the “principalities and powers” against which the Christian wrestles — “the rulers of the darkness of this world, spiritual wickedness in high places.” Sometimes called Authorities or Potentates, they are the guardians of the cosmic order at its most contested edge, charged with restraining the powers of chaos and preventing the demonic from overturning the design of creation. Because the very word for their office was claimed by both loyal and fallen spirits, the Powers stand where the line between the two is drawn and defended.

Where the Virtues shine with grace, the Powers gird themselves for battle; theirs is the vigilance that patrols the frontier between the divine order and its adversaries, ensuring that the malice loosed in the world is held forever within bounds it cannot cross. They are, in one strand of the tradition, the first choir capable of being touched by the possibility of rebellion, and so the first whose loyalty is proven in conflict rather than presumed in innocence.

To the Powers the tradition also entrusts a stranger office: they are the keepers of history, the angels who maintain the record and the balance of the ages, overseeing the distribution of power among the peoples of the earth and guarding the pathways along which souls travel. They organize the strategies of heaven and stand as border-sentries against the incursion of evil into the higher realms. Fierce, disciplined, and unsleeping, the Powers embody the truth that order is not merely given but defended — that the peace of the cosmos is held by watchmen who never leave their posts. From them the third sphere below receives its charge to guard nations and individuals, for the war they wage at the heights is fought again, in smaller theaters, all the way down to the door of every human soul.

In the Tradition

Pseudo-Dionysius reads the name of the Powers as a well-ordered and unconfined might, an authority that receives the divine dominion without arrogance and orders itself and the ranks below toward God, never abusing the power given it. Gregory the Great and Aquinas made this the choir that checks the hostile powers — the order whose special work is to coerce and restrain the demonic, holding the adversary’s force within limits so that the government of the cosmos is not overthrown. Aquinas set them at the foot of the middle triad, closest to the executive and martial functions, the disciplinary arm of the celestial administration. Later devotion, blending scripture’s warfare imagery with this ministry of restraint, painted the Powers as armored warriors, sometimes in the panoply of soldiers driving back a shadow — the guardians who keep the roads of the soul open and the gates of heaven shut against the night.
