Fourth House

Every life is built outward from a single room only you remember.

Domain

The Fourth House is the deep foundation of the chart, the ground floor beneath everything visible. It governs home and family, roots and lineage — not the public self that walks abroad but the private self that returns each night to a place it belongs. This is where you came from and where you retreat to, the emotional inheritance passed down before you were old enough to refuse it. Traditionally it is the house of the mother, or of whichever parent held the inner world of childhood, the one who made the walls feel safe or did not.

To dwell here is to consider the base of your own being: the family you were born into, the home you make, and the deeper home of the psyche that no address can hold. It is memory and belonging, the smell of a childhood kitchen, the language you think in when no one is listening. The Fourth also governs the end of things — old age, the grave, the closing of the circle — for what begins in the private ground of family finally returns there. Ruled by the Moon, it is tidal and tender, the most inward point of the wheel.

On the Wheel

The Fourth House is angular, one of the four cardinal points, and its cusp is the IC — the Imum Coeli, the lowest point of the chart, the sky at midnight beneath the earth. If the First House is the horizon of arrival, the IC is the depth of origin, the buried root from which the whole chart grows. Angular houses initiate, and the Fourth initiates inwardly, laying the private foundation upon which the visible life is raised. It sits opposite the Midheaven, the point of public destiny, and the tension between them is the tension between where we come from and where we are seen to go.
