Sodalite

Clear water under a blue sky — the mind and the voice in agreement.

The Stone

Sodalite is a deep royal blue marbled with white veins of calcite, and it is often mistaken at a glance for its more famous cousin lapis lazuli — but sodalite runs a cooler, more uniform blue, without the pyrite gold, and its white threads wander through the stone like clouds or cracks in ice. Polished, it has a soft, waxy lustre; the best pieces are a saturated navy that seems to hold depth the way a night sky does.

It is a quiet, thoughtful stone, more contemplative than dazzling. The blue is the blue of clarity — of open air and calm water — and the character matches the colour: cool, reasonable, unhurried.

Properties

Sodalite is the stone of logic and truth — a rational mind’s ally. It clears the head for clear thinking, marrying the intuition of the third eye to the honest expression of the throat so that insight can be spoken plainly and without heat. It is turned to for calm communication in tense moments, for the discipline to reason things through, and for the courage to stand by one’s own truth. Where emotion floods the argument, sodalite lowers the temperature and lets sense return.

In Practice

It is a fine study and meeting companion — kept on the desk or held in the hand to steady the nerves before speaking and to keep debate rational rather than reactive. Placed between throat and brow in meditation, it aligns what is understood with what is said. Writers and thinkers keep it near to hold a train of thought together and to cool the impulse to argue rather than clarify.
