Essence

Mem is water — mayim — the second of the three mother letters and the element of depth, dissolution, and the womb. It comes in two forms: the open mem within a word and the closed final ם, and the tradition reads them as revealed and concealed teaching, the spring that flows and the sealed cistern. The closed mem is the only letter completely shut on all four sides — the hidden waters, the mystery that cannot be spoken but only carried.

Its number is forty, and forty is always the number of immersion and transformation: forty days of the flood, forty years in the wilderness, forty days on Sinai, forty weeks of gestation. Whatever enters mem's waters for the full term comes out changed. The mikvah — the ritual bath whose minimum measure is forty se'ah — is the letter made architecture: dissolution as purification, the old form surrendered so a new one can be conferred.

On the Tree it is the twenty-third path, joining Geburah to Hod — severity descending into splendour down the Pillar of Severity. Its trump is The Hanged Man, the initiate suspended upside-down over the waters, serene, reversed, and radiant. Mem and the Hanged Man teach the same paradox from opposite banks: what looks like drowning is baptism, what looks like surrender is the only way certain depths ever get crossed.
