Essence
Yod is the smallest letter — a suspended point, barely more than a mark — and the tradition never tires of the paradox that everything begins there. Every other letter of the alphabet is calligraphically built from yods: the scribe's first touch of pen to parchment is a yod, and each stroke that follows is that point extended. It is the first letter of the four-lettered Name, the seed from which the whole Name and the whole of manifestation unfolds. Jesus's "not one jot" and the Talmud's care for the smallest stroke both guard the same intuition: the infinitely small is the infinitely important.
Its pictograph is the hand — not the open palm (that is kaf) but the hand at work, the deft point of contact where intention touches world. As the number ten it completes the first cycle of digits and contains them all, the way the ten Sephiroth contain the pattern of everything. A simple letter under Virgo, its faculty is the deed: exact, humble, perfecting labor.
On the Tree it is the twentieth path, joining Chesed to Tiphareth — mercy descending to beauty. Its trump is The Hermit, the solitary who withdraws to a point and thereby becomes a beacon: one small lamp on a mountain, one yod of light, sufficient to guide whoever is climbing. The letter and the card agree that concentration, not expansion, is where power actually lives.
