Overview
Bastet is the warmth of the domestic sun — a cat-headed goddess of the hearth, of childbirth, of music and pleasure and the small daily joys that hold a household together. In her earliest form she was a lioness, fierce and solar, the protective daughter of Ra; over time she softened into the cat, guardian of the home against snakes and vermin and evil, and became one of the best-loved deities in all of Egypt. Her cult city Bubastis drew enormous festival crowds who came, by the ancient accounts, to drink and sing and celebrate her without restraint.
She is the tender half of a fierce coin — the same feline nature as Sekhmet, but turned toward protection rather than destruction. Where Sekhmet is the lioness on the hunt, Bastet is the cat curled at the door, and the Egyptians honored both because they knew a home needs guarding as much as it needs comfort. To love Bastet was to love the ordinary sweetness of a safe house, a full belly, and children who live to grow up.
Key Myths
Protector of Ra. As the Eye of Ra, Bastet defended the sun god against the serpent Apophis, the great chaos-snake who threatened to swallow the sun each night. In cat form she was said to slay the serpent — the domestic guardian scaled up to cosmic defense, the same instinct that kills a mouse turned against the enemy of creation itself.
The two faces. Egyptian theology paired Bastet and Sekhmet as gentle and terrible aspects of a single solar feminine power. In some tellings the raging Sekhmet, once pacified, becomes Bastet — the fury spent, the lioness settling into the cat. The pair express a truth about protection: it can roar, and it can purr, and the household needs it in both registers.
The sacred cat. So closely was Bastet identified with cats that harming one could be punished by death, and Egyptians mummified cats by the hundreds of thousands as offerings to her. The living animal was treated as a small vessel of the goddess — joy, fertility, and vigilance walking on four soft feet.
