Overview

Isis is the goddess of magic and motherhood, the great enchantress whose name means "the throne" — she is the seat of kingship itself, the power that makes a pharaoh a pharaoh. But her deepest domain is hidden knowledge: she is the mistress of secret names and words of power, the one who learned the true name of Ra and with it a share of his sovereignty. Veiled, wise, and inexhaustibly resourceful, she holds the mysteries that the other gods do not.

She is the archetype the tarot calls The High Priestess: the keeper of the veil, the intuitive and hidden wisdom that stands behind the visible throne, the knowledge you must be initiated to receive. Her devotion is legendary — she gathered the scattered body of her murdered husband Osiris, revived him by magic, and hid their son Horus in the marshes until he was grown enough to reclaim his father's kingdom. Wife, sister, mother, sorceress, and mourner, she is the binding force of the whole Osirian myth, the one who refuses to let death be final.

Key Myths

The secret name of Ra. From the saliva of the aged sun god, Isis shaped a serpent whose bite no one could cure but her. She healed Ra only when he surrendered his true, hidden name — and with that word she gained magic surpassing every other deity's. It is the founding act of her power: knowledge taken, not given.

The gathering of Osiris. When Set murdered and scattered Osiris, Isis searched all of Egypt to recover the pieces, bound the body whole, and with her magic revived him long enough to conceive Horus. Her grief and her craft together undo, for a moment, the work of death.

The hidden child. She raised Horus in secret among the reeds of the Nile delta, shielding him from Set with spells and cunning until he was strong enough to challenge his uncle for the throne. The devoted, protecting mother and the patient keeper of a hidden heir are one and the same.
