Overview
Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus, known in her maiden aspect as Kore ("the Maiden") and, after her abduction, as Queen of the Underworld. She is the still center of the seasonal myth: her descent below brings winter, her return brings spring. Her power lives in her doubleness, the innocent girl gathering flowers in a meadow and the dread queen who rules the dead are the same figure, and Greek religion never resolved the two so much as held them together.
She is a goddess of thresholds: the boundary between life and death, surface and depth, innocence and knowing. The Eleusinian Mysteries, the most sacred rites of the ancient world, turned on her return, the promise that what goes down into the dark can also rise.
Key Myths
The abduction. Gathering flowers (a narcissus set as a lure), Persephone was seized by Hades and carried below with Zeus's tacit consent. Demeter searched the earth in grief, and the world went barren, the origin of winter.
The pomegranate. Because she had eaten a few pomegranate seeds in the underworld, she was bound to return there for part of each year. So she is the underworld's queen in winter and her mother's daughter in spring, neither wholly maiden nor wholly queen, but both in turn.
Kore and the Mysteries. As the seed that must enter the dark ground to rise again, Kore's descent and return were enacted in the Eleusinian Mysteries as a promise of rebirth. Hermes, the psychopomp, escorts her between the worlds.
Jung paired Demeter and Persephone as the divine mother and the divine maiden, two faces of one renewing feminine. The myth holds innocence and underworld knowledge as the same person, seen from two seasons.
