Themis

Domain: Divine law, order, and custom; the oracular voice Symbol: The scales, the sword, the tripod of prophecy, the blindfold of impartial judgment Roman Equivalent: Justitia

Overview

Themis is the Titaness of divine law and right order — not the written statutes of men but the deep, customary rightness that holds the cosmos and society together: the way things are supposed to be done, the settled order of what is fitting. Daughter of Gaia and Uranus, her name means "that which is laid down," the established custom, and she personifies the moral structure beneath the world. She sits close to the throne of Zeus as his counselor and consort, the voice that tells the king of the gods what is right, convening the assemblies of Olympus and keeping the order of the divine gatherings.

She is also an oracular power. Like her sister Phoebe, Themis held the oracle at Delphi in the age before Apollo, receiving it from her mother Gaia and speaking the future from the earth's navel. Law and prophecy are one in her, for the divine order is both what ought to be and what will be — the shape of things laid down in advance. Among all the Titans she is the one most fully honored under the new gods: not overthrown but taken up, seated beside Zeus as the very principle of the justice his reign is meant to embody. It is she whom the tarot's Justice most nearly answers — the scales that do not punish but only refuse to lie.

Key Myths

Consort and counselor of Zeus. After Hera, Themis is named as an early consort of Zeus, and by him she bore the Horae — the Seasons, who order the turning year and bear the names Good Order, Justice, and Peace — and the Moirai, the three Fates who measure and cut the thread of every life. Through these daughters Themis is the mother of both the rhythm of time and the destiny of every mortal: the order of the year and the order of a life alike descend from her. She sits at Zeus's side and summons the gods to council, the living structure of his lawful reign.

The oracle before Apollo. In the old succession at Delphi, the prophetic seat passed from Gaia to Themis and then to Phoebe before it came at last to Apollo. Themis spoke the oracles from the earth in that elder age, and even after she ceded the seat she remained a giver of prophecy — it was Themis who warned Zeus of the sea-nymph Thetis, whose son was fated to outshine his father, steering the king away from a union that would have unseated him.

The keeper of what is fitting. Wherever the divine order needs upholding, Themis stands: she is the one who declares what is right in the assemblies of gods and men, the principle of the just and the customary given a face. In art she carries the scales that weigh right against wrong — the same scales the tarot's Justice would later hold — and stands for the impartial order that makes a cosmos out of chaos.
