"When the meaning is lost in the ego, inflation results.", Edward Edinger
The Danger
Inflation is what happens when the ego identifies with an archetype, when the small self swells to contain something vastly larger than itself and mistakes that largeness for its own. You don't just encounter the divine; you think you ARE the divine. You don't just touch the archetype of the Creator; you believe you created the world. The boundary between ego and Self dissolves, and what should be a relationship becomes an identification.
Jung understood inflation as one of the central dangers of psychological work. The deeper you go, the more numinous the material you encounter. Archetypes carry enormous energy, they are patterns older than humanity, charged with the power of millions of years of psychic evolution. When the ego opens to this energy without maintaining its own boundaries, it gets swallowed. The man who dialogues with gods begins to think he is one.
The Mechanism
Inflation follows a recognizable pattern. Contact with archetypal material produces a flood of meaning, energy, and certainty. The ego, which is built to handle personal-scale experience, suddenly finds itself channeling transpersonal-scale forces. This feels extraordinary, because it is. The problem is not the contact but the identification. The ego takes credit for what belongs to the archetype. "I" am having this cosmic experience, therefore "I" must be cosmic.
The inflated state is intoxicating. Everything makes sense. Everything connects. You can see the pattern behind all patterns. You feel chosen, anointed, responsible for reality itself. And here is the terrible irony, some of what you are perceiving may be genuinely real. Archetypes are real forces. The connections may be genuine connections. But the ego's claim of ownership over these perceptions is the inflation, and that claim is what makes the state dangerous rather than transformative.

The Distinction That Matters
The entire difference between transformation and psychosis, between genuine spiritual experience and dangerous inflation, comes down to one thing: are you relating to the archetype, or are you identifying with it?
Relating means the ego maintains its boundaries while opening to numinous experience. You dialogue with the god-image. You receive the energy. You let it move through you. But you know, even in the midst of the experience, that you are the vessel, not the source. This is active imagination done well. This is healthy spiritual practice.
