Golden Ratio

The proportion that repeats itself when divided — beauty written as a single number.

The Form

The golden ratio, denoted by the Greek letter phi, is the proportion in which a line is divided so that the whole is to the larger part as the larger part is to the smaller. Its value is approximately 1.618, an irrational number that can be written as one plus the square root of five, all over two. What distinguishes phi from every other proportion is its self-similarity: a golden rectangle, when a square is removed from it, leaves behind another golden rectangle, and this can continue without end, the same shape nested within itself at ever-smaller scale. The spiral drawn through those diminishing squares is the logarithmic curve that appears throughout the growing world.

Phi is not a figure so much as a relationship, but it is woven into many of the sacred forms. It governs the proportions of the regular pentagon and therefore of the dodecahedron; it emerges as the limit of the ratios of the Fibonacci sequence; and it recurs in the branching of plants, the spiral of shells, and the measures of art and architecture across the ages.

Meaning

The golden ratio has long been called the divine proportion, the measure by which nature and art alike are felt to be beautiful. Its metaphysical resonance lies in its self-reference: it is the proportion that reproduces itself under division, so that the part echoes the whole endlessly, a mathematical image of the maxim that the microcosm mirrors the macrocosm. This makes it kin to the deepest intuition of Alchemy, the conviction that the pattern of the great is repeated in the small. Because it structures the pentagon and thus the fifth solid, phi is tied to the quintessence and the cosmos, and its appearance across leaf and shell and galaxy suggests a single proportion threaded through creation, a signature of order that the eye recognizes before the mind can name it.
