The Principle of Polarity

"Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites."

The fourth Hermetic principle, and one of the strangest to modern ears. Polarity holds that opposites are identical in nature, differing only in degree. Heat and cold are not two different things but a single thing — temperature — read at different points on one scale. Where does hot end and cold begin? Nowhere; the line is arbitrary. The same is claimed for light and dark, large and small, love and hate, courage and fear. Each pair names a single continuum, not two separate substances.

The teaching that follows is transmutation. Because the poles are one thing in degree, you can move along the scale — raise fear toward courage, hate toward love — precisely because they were never separate to begin with. You cannot transmute hot into a different thing; you can only move it toward cold, its own other end. The art of the Hermeticist is to shift the vibratory degree of a mental state rather than to fight it head-on. You do not defeat fear; you climb the scale it lives on.

Why It Matters to Kenneth

Polarity gives Kenneth a frame for the swings his own mind has taught him. Mania and depression are, on this reading, not two afflictions but two ends of one axis — the same energy at different degrees, which is part of why the way through is regulation rather than eradication. The clinical picture and the Hermetic one point at the same structural fact from different sides: the poles are joined, and the work is to find the middle rather than to amputate an end.

The principle also names something at the heart of creative and spiritual practice: the reconciliation of opposites without collapsing either one. That is Temperance as a Tarot virtue, the transcendent function in Jungian terms — the third thing that emerges when two poles are held together long enough to reveal they were always one.

  • Hermeticism — the tradition and the other six principles
  • The Principle of Rhythm — the swing between the poles this principle names
  • The Transcendent Function — opposites held until a third emerges
  • Temperance — polarity transmuted into balance
  • Schizoaffective Disorder — mania and depression as one axis
  • Enantiodromia — the tendency of a thing to become its opposite
