Eight arrows of green fire, loosed at once, already falling toward the thing you meant to say.
Imagery
Eight wands fly in parallel across a clear sky, angled downward as if in the last arc of flight before landing. There are no human figures at all — an unusual emptiness for the suit. Below stretches a green countryside with a river and a distant house on a hill. The wands are still sprouting leaves, living even in motion. The composition is pure trajectory, all diagonal momentum, and the eye follows the staves toward their imminent touchdown. The feeling is swiftness — energy released and rushing toward its target, the pause before impact.
Upright
The Eight of Wands is speed, movement, the sudden acceleration of events after a period of gathering. Messages arrive, plans take flight, obstacles clear and everything moves at once. It often marks news, travel, or communication delivered quickly — the arrows already loosed and unstoppable. There is exhilaration here, the relief of momentum after friction and stalemate. The invitation is to align yourself with the current rather than resist it, to act while the window is open, and to trust that what was set in motion is now carrying itself home.
Reversed
Reversed, the swiftness snarls. Momentum stalls, messages are delayed or misdelivered, and the rush becomes chaos — too much happening too fast to steer. It can mark scattered energy, hasty decisions that miss the mark, or frustration as an expected arrival fails to land. The shadow is speed without direction, the arrows loosed before the aim was true, leaving one scrambling to recall what cannot be recalled.

| Decan | Mercury in Sagittarius, the first decan of Sagittarius — Mercury's quickness carried by Sagittarius's far-flying fire. The Golden Dawn titled this card Swiftness: rapid motion, communication, the arrow in flight. |
Archetype
This is the psyche's flow-state, the moment when resistance dissolves and energy moves cleanly toward its aim. Jung wrote of libido as directed psychic energy; here it runs unobstructed, like the arrow that becomes one with its trajectory. There is a Zen quality to the card — the archer who has released and now merely watches, will and world briefly synchronised in what feels almost like Synchronicity, events aligning as if the whole field had tilted toward arrival.
Mythological Echoes
The card carries every winged messenger: Hermes with his sandalled speed, Iris descending the rainbow, the arrows of Apollo and Eros that strike before their flight is even seen. It echoes the divine dispatch, the word sent from on high that changes everything the moment it lands, and the hunter-god's unerring shaft.
In Practice
When this card appears, things are about to move quickly — ready yourself rather than brace against it. Ask what you have already set flying that you cannot now recall, and whether your aim was true. Sometimes the work is simply to get out of the arrow's way.
