He spurs the horse before he knows the road, and trusts the fire to find it for him.
Imagery
An armoured knight rides a rearing horse, his wand held aloft like a lance. His breastplate and cloak are patterned with salamanders — fire made flesh — and his plume streams behind him in red. The horse is caught mid-leap, forelegs in the air, all forward momentum barely under control. Three pyramids stand in the arid distance, the same desert the Page contemplated, now crossed at a gallop. The composition is dynamic and diagonal, everything straining ahead. The feeling is impetuous drive: passion in motion, courage bordering on recklessness, a spirit that charges first and reckons later.
Upright
The Knight of Wands is fire in action — bold, adventurous, magnetic, and impatient. He embodies the impulse to pursue passion with everything you have, to chase the vision across whatever terrain lies between. This card speaks of confidence, charisma, travel, and the thrilling risk of the leap taken before the ground is checked. He is the entrepreneur, the adventurer, the lover who arrives like a comet. His energy is infectious and his courage real. The invitation is to let his fire carry you toward what excites you — while remembering that a horse mid-leap must eventually land.
Reversed
Reversed, the charge becomes chaos. Impulsiveness tips into recklessness, passion into volatility; projects are begun in a blaze and abandoned when the fire cools. It can mark hot temper, arrogance, scattered energy, or the frustration of drive that has no direction. The shadow is the burnout of the perpetual charger — a man forever leaping and never arriving, mistaking motion for progress and heat for meaning.

| Element | Fire. Sub-element: Air of Fire — the swift, mobile, communicative aspect of the fiery suit. The Knight is fire in rapid motion, the flame fanned by wind into forward flight. |
Archetype
This is the hero on the quest in his most kinetic form, the warrior-spirit whose gift is momentum and whose peril is inflation. Jung would recognise here the fiery libido unrestrained by reflection — vital, necessary, but liable to possess the ego and gallop it off a cliff. The Knight must eventually integrate the containment his opposite carries; his raw drive finds its truer form when disciplined toward a worthy aim, as the will is mastered in The Chariot and tempered by the inner steadiness of Strength.
Mythological Echoes
The card carries every mounted hero charging into legend — the errant knight of romance, Bellerophon on winged Pegasus, the cavalry of gods who ride the storm. It echoes Phaethon seizing the reins of the sun-chariot, all glorious daring and disastrous overreach, the youth whose fire outran his skill and set the sky ablaze.
In Practice
When this card appears, passion wants to move — the question is whether it has somewhere to land. Ride the enthusiasm, but choose your horizon before you gallop. Journal on where your fire is charging, and whether you have thought at all about the return.
