Zhen

One solid line beneath two broken — the first spark of yang shocking the dark into motion.

Zhen is the trigram of Thunder, ☳: a single unbroken yang line at the bottom with two broken yin lines above it. That lone strong line at the base is the whole meaning — the first stirring of active energy pushing up from beneath the yielding, the shock that breaks a stillness. It is the Arousing, the sudden movement that sets things going: the thunderclap, the earthquake, the jolt of a decision after long hesitation. Everything it touches is put into motion.

As the eldest of Kun's children — the trigram that first received a yang line into the receptive ground — Zhen is the Eldest Son, the firstborn energy that leaps ahead. Its natural element is Wood, the springtime force of growth that bursts upward through resistance, and fittingly the Later Heaven arrangement places it in the East, the direction of sunrise and of spring, where the year's first movement begins.

In divination Zhen brings shock and awakening — an event that startles, disturbs, and ultimately mobilizes. It is rarely comfortable, but it is generative: the thunder that terrifies also announces the rain. Its counsel is to move with the arousing energy rather than freeze before it, remembering that the fright passes and leaves the ground quickened.
