"Don't Panic."
The ur-text. Douglas Adams proposed that the universe is fundamentally absurd and that the correct response is curiosity, humor, and a towel. That's not comedy, that's survival strategy.
The influence on Kenneth's work is everywhere. The vault's greeting ("Don't Panic") is borrowed directly. The Hitchhiker's Guide to Python took the title deliberately. The voice of the essays, deadpan, self-aware, willing to find the cosmic joke, is Adams filtered through Python.
The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything turned out to be 42. The question itself was never found. Adams understood that the search matters more than the answer, and that the search is funnier than either.
