Glasya-Labolas

“A winged dog, author of bloodshed, yet he grants the love of friend and foe.”

The Spirit

Glasya-Labolas — also called Caacrinolaas or Caassimolar in variant manuscripts — is the twenty-fifth spirit of the Ars Goetia, a mighty President and, in some texts, an Earl of the infernal orders. The grimoire gives him the form of a dog with the wings of a griffin, a fierce and swift aspect that pairs the loyalty of the hound with the predatory grandeur of the griffin. This winged canine form is among the more memorable images of the Lesser Key, and the tradition frames him as a spirit of contradictory powers, at once instructive and destructive.

He is described as the author and captain of manslaughter and bloodshed, a spirit implicated in violence — yet the same entry credits him with softer gifts, a duality that runs through many of the Goetic figures.

Office

According to the Goetia, Glasya-Labolas teaches all arts and sciences in an instant, imparting knowledge with sudden completeness. He tells of things past and to come, and he can incite bloodshed and manslaughter or, conversely, cause the love of both friends and foes. He is further said to make a man go invisible. He is thus a spirit of paradox — teacher, prophet, instigator of slaughter, and reconciler of enemies all at once.
