“A monster who teaches the tongues, and gives the favour of friends and foes.”
The Spirit
Ronove — also rendered Ronwe or Roneve — is the twenty-seventh spirit of the Ars Goetia, named in the tradition as both a Marquis and a Great Earl of the infernal orders. The grimoire describes him only as a monster, without the elaborate composite forms given to many of his fellows, leaving his precise appearance to the imagination of the operator. Some later illustrators depicted him as a figure holding a staff, but the manuscript itself is spare on this point, an unusual reticence within a text otherwise given to vivid description.
What the tradition emphasises instead is his role as a teacher, particularly of language and eloquence, which situates Ronove among the scholarly spirits of the Lesser Key alongside figures such as Naberius.
Office
The Goetia holds that Ronove teaches the art of rhetoric and gives good and faithful servants. He imparts the knowledge of tongues, granting an understanding of languages, and he procures the favour of both friends and foes, winning goodwill on every side. He is thus a spirit of persuasion and diplomacy, invoked for command of speech, mastery of languages, and the securing of allies.
