Sabnock

The lion-headed rider who raises castles and lets wounds fester with worms.

The Spirit

Sabnock — also spelled Sabnach, Savnok, or Salmac — is the forty-third spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great Marquis who appears in the form of an armed soldier with the head of a lion, riding upon a pale horse. He is one of the martial and architectural spirits of the catalogue, a builder of strongholds and a maker of wounds whose office joins the raising of fortifications with the infliction of disease. His lion's head and pale steed mark him as one of the more imposing warriors of the hierarchy.

The tradition treats him as a spirit of siege and affliction in equal measure — as ready to construct high towers, camps, and cities and to furnish them with arms as he is to let the bodies of men rot with sores. He is a builder whose other hand deals in decay.

Office

The Goetia says Sabnock builds high towers, castles, and cities, and furnishes them with weapons and ammunition. He can afflict men for many days with wounds and sores that putrefy and fill with worms, and he gives good familiars to the operator at command. His office thus spans the fortress and the wound — the construction of strongholds on the one hand and the slow ruin of the body on the other.
