He turns one substance into another as easily as water finds its level.
The Spirit
Zagan is the sixty-first spirit of the Ars Goetia, ranked a Great King and President — a doubled dignity that places him among the more powerful officers of the catalogue. He is described as appearing at first in the form of a bull adorned with the wings of a gryphon, and afterward, when the conjuration proceeds, in the shape of a man. The bovine form recalls the beast of burden and fertility, while the transformation into a human figure mirrors the alchemical character of his office, in which one nature is coaxed into another.
Of the seventy-two, Zagan is preeminently the spirit of transmutation and reversal. His workings turn on the changing of one thing into its opposite or its refinement, and the tradition treats him as a master of both material and mental alchemy.
Office
The Goetia records that Zagan makes men witty, and can turn wine into water and water into wine, and blood into wine, and wine into blood; he likewise turns metals into coin after the fashion of their proper metal, transforming the base into the current. Beyond these transmutations he is said to make fools wise — a change of the spirit to match his changes of substance. He is, in sum, the officer of conversion, whether of liquids, metals, or minds.
