Haheuiah

“A roof for the one the world has turned out of doors.”

The Angel

Haheuiah ends in -iah and is glossed “God good in himself” — goodness not as a transaction or a reward but as the very nature of the divine, needing no cause outside itself. From this uncaused goodness flows his particular office: refuge. Haheuiah is the angel of the exile, the fugitive, the wrongly condemned, the one who has nowhere to lay his head. He is invoked by those who flee — from persecution, from false accusation, from the collapse of a life — and by those who shelter them.

His virtue is protection, and a very tender one. Where other angels of this decan govern healing and safe passage, Haheuiah governs the deeper safety of belonging somewhere, of being wanted rather than merely tolerated. The tradition names him the guardian of secrets and of those who guard them, the one who conceals what must not be found and reveals it only to the trustworthy. He grants truth in dreams and the discovery of hidden things, but his central gift is sanctuary: the assurance that the divine goodness holds a place even for the one who has lost every earthly place. To invoke Haheuiah is to ask, on behalf of the displaced and the frightened, that there be somewhere to go — and to be reminded that shelter, freely given, is one of the oldest names of God.
