“What was bent low is lifted; what was bound is loosed.”
The Angel
The name Mitzrael carries in its root the memory of Mitzrayim — the narrow place, the constriction, Egypt as the archetype of bondage — bound to the divine element -el, “God.” Read together, the name is understood as God who raises up the oppressed, and the angel's whole office is contained in that reversal. Mitzrael attends the moment when a weight is taken off, when the one who has been ground down is straightened and set on their feet again. It is the intelligence of deliverance operating within the human interior as much as in outward circumstance.
The virtue it bestows is a fidelity that outlasts affliction — the strength to remain whole under pressure and to be repaired afterward. Mitzrael is invoked against persecution, against the malice of enemies, and against the mental illnesses that arise from prolonged oppression; it is said to heal what has been broken by cruelty and to restore obedience of the passions to reason. Those under its governance often become instruments of the same mercy they received, natural advocates for the abused and the wronged. Where Harahel gathers and keeps, Mitzrael releases and restores, closing the sign of Capricorn on a note of liberation.
