Phases of the Moon

About

The psyche is not a fixed thing but a rhythm.

The Moon is the only heavenly body whose changes are visible to the naked eye night by night — which is why every culture read its cycle as the master metaphor for change itself. In roughly 29.5 days the Moon runs the whole arc: darkness, first light, fullness, and the long exhale back to darkness. Astrology reads each station as a mood of time — a phase isn't something the Moon has, it's something the month does, and anything begun, ripened, or released takes the character of the phase it happens under.

The Greeks compressed the cycle into the lunar triad: Artemis the waxing crescent huntress, Selene the full and shining moon, and Hecate the moon gone dark. The Tarot splits the same territory between The High Priestess (the Moon's still, reflective knowing) and The Moon (the night road under uncertain light). And on the Tree of Life, all of it pools in Yesod, the lunar sphere where images form before they descend into matter.

The Eight Phases

Phase Light Keynote
New Moon 🌑 0% Seed — intention set in the dark
Waxing Crescent 🌒 ~25% Faith — tending what can't yet be seen
First Quarter 🌓 50% Crisis of action — commit or abandon
Waxing Gibbous 🌔 ~75% Refinement — the patience before fullness
Full Moon 🌕 100% Revelation — everything flood-lit at once
Waning Gibbous 🌖 ~75% Dissemination — sharing the harvest
Last Quarter 🌗 50% Crisis of conscience — release what's done
Waning Crescent 🌘 ~25% Surrender — composting back to seed

Laid end to end, the eight stations close into the cycle they always were:

The waxing half (New to Full) is the Moon of Artemis — building, striving, growing toward light. The waning half (Full to New) belongs to Hecate — digesting, releasing, returning wisdom to the dark. Full and New are the hinges: culmination and conception.
