Essence

He is the window, the opening through which light and sight enter the house that bet built. Phonetically it is barely there — a soft exhalation, the lightest of the letters — and the tradition treasures exactly that: the world to come was created with yod, the sages say, but this world was created with he, with a breath. It is the letter of divine gift so effortless it costs nothing, and of the sight that a mere opening in a wall makes possible.

He appears twice in the four-lettered Name, the two vessels that receive and transmit the divine flow. It is the letter added to Abram to make Abraham and to Sarai to make Sarah — the breath of God inserted into a name, changing a destiny by five. As the number five it is the grace note beyond the square of four, the quintessence added to the elements.

It is a simple letter, assigned in the Sefer Yetzirah to Aries and to the faculty of sight — the first sign of spring and the first of the senses, fittingly paired. On the Tree it is the fifteenth path, joining Chokmah to Tiphareth, wisdom descending to beauty. Its trump is The Emperor, the ram-throned lawgiver whose ordering gaze surveys the realm: sovereignty, in this system, is a kind of seeing, and the window is where the ruler stands to keep watch.
