The Crown looked once and became a spear of light — and where the light was flung, all things began to move.
Essence
Chokmah is Wisdom, the second emanation, the first true motion in a cosmos that until now held only a dimensionless point. Where Kether simply is, Chokmah is the outrush — the dynamic, masculine, thrusting energy that leaps from the Crown as pure force without form. It is the Zodiac itself, the whirling field of the fixed stars, the great Father who fecundates but does not shape. Nothing here is yet an object; everything is impulse, the divine will discharging itself in a single unbroken gesture.
To stand in Chokmah is to feel life before it has decided what to become — vitality with no vessel, wisdom that is not knowledge but the living urge from which knowledge will later be refined. It is called the Illuminating Intelligence, and its light is grey, the pearl-grey of a force so pure it has taken no color. Devotion is its virtue: the surrender of the self to a current larger than itself, the willingness to be flung.

On the Tree
Chokmah sits at the head of the Pillar of Mercy, the right-hand column of expansion and force, directly across the top of the Tree from Binah, its dark counterpart. Above it stands Kether alone; below and across the abyss lie Chesed and the whole mercied world it will father. From Chokmah the paths spread out to gather form: The Magician rises from it back toward the Crown as the channel of will, while The Empress runs across the supernal triangle to Binah, the marriage of Father and Mother from which the third sphere is born. The Emperor and the Hierophant also descend from it into the sphere of the mind and toward Chesed below.
In Tarot
The four Twos belong to Chokmah — the number of first division, of a force met by a second and so set into relationship. The Two of Wands is dominion, the Two of Cups love, the Two of Swords peace restored, the Two of Pentacles change; each shows the primal will finding its first partner. Chokmah’s trumps are the great outgoing gestures, The Magician and The Empress, the willed word and the fertile answer to it.
