"As above, so below; as below, so above."
The second Hermetic principle, and the most famous line in all of Western esotericism. Correspondence holds that the microcosm mirrors the macrocosm — that the same patterns repeat across every scale of reality. The movements of the planets correspond to movements in the psyche; the behaviour of the atom corresponds to the behaviour of the galaxy. The pattern doesn't merely resemble across scales, the Hermeticist insists — it is the same pattern, expressed through different media.
Its great source is The Emerald Tablet, where the line first crystallizes. The value of the principle is epistemic: because the scales correspond, knowledge of one becomes knowledge of the others. Study the visible to understand the invisible; read the outer world as a map of the inner. This isn't mystical hand-waving so much as a structural intuition about how reality organizes itself — the same intuition that fractals, power-law distributions, and self-similar systems make rigorous. The alchemists lacked the mathematics but had the insight: the universe has habits, and those habits repeat.
Why It Matters to Kenneth
Correspondence is the structural intuition behind nearly everything Kenneth builds. requests works because the interface should correspond to the concept — HTTP ought to be as simple as its name implies. The For Humans philosophy assumes that if something feels wrong to use, it is wrong, because human ergonomic intuition corresponds to genuine design quality; the feeling and the fact are the same pattern at different scales.
His album As Above So Below is named for this principle and built to embody it — analog warmth below, digital expansiveness above, each reflecting the other. And in System 777, correspondence operates between inner and outer worlds: alters correspond to archetypes, internal landscapes to psychological states, and the documentation itself is an act of correspondence — the invisible made visible, the inner world rendered in markdown.
