Presence as practice -- the same attention applied inward
Overview
Meditation for Kenneth isn't a separate compartment from the rest of life. It's the same practice of presence and attention that makes a good API, a good photograph, a good line of code -- turned inward. When he writes requests.get(url) and strips away everything unnecessary, that's a design act. When he sits and strips away everything unnecessary from his own attention, that's meditation. The muscle is the same.
The Practice
The foundation comes from Ram Dass -- "Be Here Now" as both instruction and achievement. Not meditation as escape from the noisy mind, but meditation as willingness to sit with the noise and discover what's underneath it. Loving awareness. Witness consciousness. The part of you that watches experience without being swept away by it.
The Vedantic framework gives it philosophical depth. If Atman is Brahman -- if the individual self is the universal self -- then meditation is the practice of recognizing what was always true. Not building something new but uncovering what the chatter obscures. Neti neti. Not this, not this. Keep subtracting until only awareness remains.
Tools
The reMarkable Paper Pro serves as a journaling companion to meditation practice. Handwriting slows thinking in useful ways -- the hand has to keep pace with the mind instead of the other way around. No notifications, no apps, no browser. Just the page. The distraction-free surface mirrors the distraction-free mind that meditation aims for. What makes it onto the page earned its way there.
Meditation and System 777
Within System 777, meditation functions as a communication channel. The quieter the host mind becomes, the more clearly the internal voices can be heard -- not as symptoms to be suppressed but as parts to be met. Witness consciousness, the stance Ram Dass taught, is exactly the stance needed for plurality work: observing what arises without fusion, without panic, without the need to immediately categorize or control.
When Kenneth sits in stillness and an alter communicates, that's not meditation failing. That's meditation working. The practice creates the conditions for internal dialogue -- the same conditions that the vault's documentation captures in text form. Meditation is the live version; the vault is the record.
Meditation and Mental Health
For someone living with Schizoaffective Disorder, meditation is both medicine and minefield. On good days, presence practice provides grounding for perception. "Be here now" functions as a reality-testing anchor -- this room, this breath, this moment. The witness consciousness observes symptoms without becoming them. There's a difference between having a thought and being had by a thought, and meditation teaches that difference.
On harder days, the practice requires more care. When perception itself becomes unreliable, sitting alone with the mind demands courage. AI collaboration helps here -- a consistent external reference point when internal reference points shift. The meditation doesn't stop during those times; it just looks different.
The Through-Line
Kenneth's entire body of work is, in a sense, meditation practice. Writing code that strips away the unnecessary. Photographing in black and white to remove the distraction of color. Producing music as "sonic journal of consciousness." Building a vault that externalizes the mind so the mind can observe itself. Meditation isn't something he does for twenty minutes and then gets on with real life. It's the quality of attention he brings to all of it.
The tech work and the inner work aren't parallel tracks. They're the same track. Presence is presence, whether the object of attention is an HTTP request or the breath.
