Be Here Now — The primary spiritual teacher
Overview
Ram Dass (1931-2019), born Richard Alpert, is Kenneth's primary spiritual influence. Harvard psychology professor turned mystic, he bridged Eastern wisdom and Western minds, modeling the very transformation Kenneth has undergone — from academic/technical achievement to consciousness exploration.
The Journey
His life falls into three acts, each with its own page. The psychedelic years cover Richard Alpert the Harvard psychologist, the psilocybin research with Timothy Leary, and the firing that ended his academic life. In 1967 he traveled to India, met the guru Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji), received the name Ram Dass — "servant of God" — and returned transformed. The teaching years that followed opened with Be Here Now (1971) and ran until his death on December 22, 2019, deepening late in life into Loving Awareness after his 1997 stroke and into Walking Each Other Home, his long meditation on conscious aging and death.
The Teachings
The collection breaks his message into its major currents. Be Here Now is the foundational instruction — past is memory, future is projection, only this moment is real. Loving Awareness is the mature distillation: "I am loving awareness," consciousness recognizing itself through love, being love rather than doing it. Neem Karoli Baba holds the guru relationship — the mirror of unconditional love, and the truth that "the guru is within you." Walking Each Other Home carries the teaching on death and dying: from somebody to nobody to everybody, ego dissolution as expansion rather than destruction, death as transition. Running underneath all of it is service as practice — Karma Yoga, action without attachment — and the witness consciousness that watches experience without being swept away.
