Essence
Binah is Understanding, the third emanation and the Supernal Mother, the dark womb in which the formless force of Chokmah is at last given shape. If Wisdom is the seed, Understanding is the soil that receives it and, in receiving, imposes the first limit — for to give a thing form is to give it a boundary, and every boundary is a small death. Binah is therefore both the Mother who bears all life and the door through which that life must pass into mortality; she is called the Great Sea, and her deepest color is black, the black of fertile dark and of mourning at once.
Her planet is Saturn, lord of time and constriction, the ring that binds the boundless. Her virtue is Silence, for Understanding is not the noise of the intellect but the deep stillness in which meaning settles and takes weight. To reach Binah is to comprehend sorrow as the price of form and to accept it — the grief of the mother who knows that what she brings to birth she has also condemned to end.

Binah crowns the Pillar of Severity, the left-hand column of form and restriction, facing Chokmah across the supernal triangle whose apex is Kether. Above it, along its own pillar, is nothing but the Crown; below it, across the abyss, waits Geburah and the world of judgment it will discipline. The paths from Binah reach in every direction: The Empress joins it to Chokmah, The Magician rises toward the Crown, The Lovers descends to Tiphareth, and The Chariot carries its constricting power down to Geburah below.
In Tarot
The four Threes belong to Binah — Understanding’s number, where two poles meet and a third thing is conceived. The Three of Wands is established strength, the Three of Cups abundance, the Three of Swords sorrow, the Three of Pentacles work made real; each is a first fruit of the union above. Because Binah is the sphere of Saturn, its planetary trump is The World, the sealed and finished cosmos, time’s completed round, the boundary drawn around all that is.
