A soldier on a great horse, his lion’s face red as fire, his eyes burning.
The Spirit
Alloces — also written Alocer or Allocer — is the fifty-second spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great Duke who appears in the guise of a soldier or knight riding upon a great horse. His face is that of a lion, ruddy and glowing red, with eyes that burn like fire; he speaks with a great and heavy voice. He is armed and armoured in the manner of a warrior, and the grimoire portrays him as a commanding, martial presence whose flaming countenance marks his solar and fiery associations.
Beneath the fearsome soldier’s exterior, Alloces is chiefly a teacher of the heavens and of hidden learning, one of the many Goetic spirits in whom terror and tuition are combined.
Office
The Goetia states that Alloces teaches the art of astronomy and the knowledge of the liberal sciences. He gives good and faithful familiars to those who summon him, and he causes men to be immortal in the sense of a long and enduring life. His office therefore joins the study of the stars with the granting of learned companions, presenting him as an instructor whose fiery aspect belies his role as a patron of knowledge.
