A thrush that becomes a man, translating the speech of birds and burning coals.
The Spirit
Caim — also written Caym or Camio — is the fifty-third spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great President who first appears in the form of a thrush or similar bird, and afterward, when commanded, takes the shape of a man carrying a sharp sword. When he answers the operator he seems to reply out of burning ashes or coals. The grimoire records that before his fall he belonged to the angelic order of Angels, giving his portrait the wistful cast common to the fallen-angel spirits of the catalogue.
His signature gift concerns understanding — specifically the comprehension of voices and languages that ordinarily lie beyond human hearing, which places him among the spirits of hidden knowledge.
Office
The Goetia says that Caim gives men the understanding of the voices of birds, of the lowing of cattle, of the barking of dogs, and of the sound of the waters. He also gives true answers concerning things to come, and he is a subtle disputant, skilled in argument. His office is thus one of translation and prophecy — opening the meanings hidden in the speech of animals and the elements, and granting foresight to those who consult him.
