The King of three heads, riding upon the infernal dragon, breathing fire from every mouth.
The Spirit
Asmoday — better known outside the grimoires as Asmodeus — is the thirty-second spirit of the Ars Goetia and one of its most formidable figures, a Great King with roots reaching far deeper than the medieval demonologies. The name descends from the Aeshma of Zoroastrian tradition and passes through the Book of Tobit, where Asmodeus is the demon of lust who slays the bridegrooms of Sarah. By the time he enters the Lesser Key of Solomon he has become a spirit of terrible dignity, three-headed and fire-breathing, riding upon a hellish dragon with a lance and banner in hand. His three heads are given as those of a bull, a man, and a ram — beasts of lust and stubborn power — and his feet are webbed like a goose.
The Goetia is emphatic that he must be approached bareheaded and with reverence, for he is the strong and powerful king who guards the way to hidden treasure.
Office
The Goetia says Asmoday gives the ring of virtues, teaches the arts of arithmetic, astronomy, geometry, and all handicrafts. He answers truly and fully any question put to him, can make a man invisible, and reveals the location of guarded treasures. He is said to govern seventy-two legions of inferior spirits.
