A teacher of philosophy and of the virtues of every herb.
The Spirit
Buer is the tenth spirit of the Ars Goetia and a president among its ranks. The grimoire connects his appearance with the sun in Sagittarius, and gives him a form so distinctive that it has become one of the most reproduced images from the whole catalogue: a wheel or star of radiating limbs, a body from which legs extend like the spokes of a rolling shape, sometimes drawn with the head of a lion at its centre. This solar and radial figure sets him apart among the many hybrid beasts of the tradition.
He belongs to the healing and teaching class of spirits, and the grimoire treats him as a benevolent instructor rather than a spirit of force or dread.
Office
According to the Goetia, Buer teaches natural and moral philosophy, logic, and the virtues of all herbs and plants. He heals distempers, particularly those of men, and bestows good and faithful familiars. His office is therefore that of the physician-philosopher — a spirit consulted for learning, for the properties of the natural world, and for the cure of ailments — which places him among the more benign presences of the catalogue.
