“A gentle duke, who binds men and women in love.”
The Spirit
Sallos — also rendered Saleos in some manuscripts — is the nineteenth spirit of the Ars Goetia, a great and mighty Duke of the infernal orders. The grimoire presents him in a notably peaceable light: he appears as a gallant soldier riding upon a crocodile and wearing a ducal crown, an image both regal and faintly exotic. Among the spirits of the Lesser Key, Sallos is distinguished by his temperament, for the text describes him as peaceable, a quality not lavished upon many of his fellows.
The crocodile mount is one of the more memorable of the Goetic beasts, and the ducal crown affirms his standing. His bearing is that of a courteous knight rather than a menacing power.
Office
The office of Sallos belongs to the domain of love. The Goetia holds that he causes the love of men toward women and of women toward men, drawing the affections of the two sexes into mutual regard. In this he joins the small company of Goetic spirits — alongside figures such as Zepar — whose sole concern is the kindling and binding of desire, though Sallos is remembered for working his office gently and without the harsher corollaries attributed to some of his kin.
