A lion upon a black horse, tearing down walls at a word.
The Spirit
Vine — sometimes written Vinea — is the forty-fifth spirit of the Ars Goetia, ranked as both a King and an Earl, an unusual doubling that the grimoire tradition preserves without much explanation. He is said to appear in the form of a lion mounted upon a black horse, bearing a viper in his hand. As with several of the higher-ranking spirits, the operator is advised to command him into human shape so that discourse may proceed without terror.
Vine belongs to the family of Goetic spirits associated with knowledge and elemental force at once — a diviner who is also a besieger of fortifications. This pairing of the scholarly and the destructive is characteristic of the grimoire’s composite portraits, where a single entity governs both revelation and ruin.
Office
According to the Goetia, Vine discovers hidden things, reveals witches and the workings of witchcraft, and makes known things past, present, and things to come. At the operator’s bidding he builds towers, throws down great stone walls, and stirs the waters into storms and tempests. He is thus invoked both for concealed knowledge and for the raw command of weather and structure — the seer who can also unmake what stands before him.
