Daniel

Mercy is only justice that has learned to speak gently.

The Angel

As the fiftieth name of the Shem ha-Mephorash, Daniel (דָּנִיאֵל) joins the root din, "judgement," to the suffix -el, "God," giving "the Sign of Mercies" or, in its plainer sense, "God is my judge." This is the Shem-angel of the fifth to tenth degrees of Sagittarius, not the prophet or any other bearer of the name; here Daniel is one of the seventy-two rays lifted from the letters of Exodus 14:19–21, the point where the severity of judgement is softened into clemency.

Daniel's virtue is eloquence, mercy, and consolation. He grants persuasive and comforting speech — the gift of the advocate, the counsellor, the writer whose words console rather than wound — and he inclines those in authority toward leniency. Where strict justice would condemn, Daniel supplies the mitigating word, the extenuating circumstance, the reason for mercy. The tradition sets him over those who must decide the fates of others and over any who make their living by the honest use of language. Positioned in the archer's early degrees, where Sagittarius turns its love of truth toward teaching and law, Daniel keeps eloquence tethered to compassion. To invoke him is to ask for words that heal, judgements that spare, and the consolation that lets a person bear what cannot be changed.
