“Who is like God? — the question is itself the shield.”
The Angel
Mikael bears the great interrogative name mi-ka-el, “Who is like God?” — the challenge that admits no equal to the divine — sealed with the suffix -el, “God.” As one of the seventy-two it is distinguished from the archangel of the same name yet shares in its office of guardianship, presiding over the ordering of human affairs and the safe conduct of those who travel.
Ruling the final pentad of Libra, from twenty-five to thirty degrees, Mikael governs political affairs, the affairs of state, and the protection of the traveller. Its classical office is to preserve order among rulers and peoples, to reveal conspiracies and secret dealings, and to keep safe those who journey by land or sea. The virtue it bestows is providential discernment joined to loyalty in public life — the ability to see the true shape of political currents, to serve the common good without corruption, and to move through the world under a canopy of protection. Under its influence the affairs of nations are steadied, the honest official is guarded against the intrigues of the ambitious, and the traveller returns unharmed. It is invoked by those engaged in government and diplomacy, by voyagers setting out on long roads, and by any who must navigate the perilous currents of power with integrity intact. In the comparative scheme Mikael answers the Goetic duke Vepar, a spirit of waters who guides ships and can raise storms and putrid wounds; where Vepar rules the treacherous sea, Mikael rules the providence that carries the traveller safely across it.
