Nanael

The proud tower falls so that the quiet cell may hear the transmission.

The Angel

Nanael (נַנָאֵל) draws on a root associated with casting down or bringing low joined to the suffix -el, "God," and is read as "God who casts down the proud" or "God who humbles the haughty." He is the fifty-third ray of the Shem ha-Mephorash, lifted from the letters of Exodus 14:19–21, and his office pairs a stern function — the humbling of arrogance — with a gentle one: the opening of the contemplative mind.

Nanael's virtue is spiritual communication and the higher sciences. He governs the study of abstract and elevated things — theology, jurisprudence, the mystical disciplines — and grants the retirement and interior stillness in which such study bears fruit. The tradition credits him with a special gift for those who withdraw from worldly ambition: the ecstatic communication that visits the solitary, the quiet illumination available only to a mind that has stopped grasping. His humbling of the proud is therefore not punishment but preparation, the clearing away of vanity that must precede genuine reception. Ruling the twentieth to twenty-fifth degrees of Sagittarius, the sign of philosophy and the far horizon, Nanael favours the scholar, the contemplative, and anyone who trades noise for depth. To invoke him is to ask for the lowering of one's own pride and the opening of the channels through which higher knowledge arrives.
