Andrealphus

He measures the earth and the sky in the same breath.

The Spirit

Andrealphus is the sixty-fifth spirit of the Ars Goetia and a Mighty Marquis. He is said to appear at first in the form of a peacock, raising a great noise, and afterward, when the conjuration is complete, to take the shape of a man. The peacock is a bird of measured display and countless eyes, an apt emblem for a spirit whose competence lies in precise measurement and exact knowledge, and its clamour marks the disturbance of his first arrival before he settles into a teachable form.

Among the seventy-two, Andrealphus belongs to the scholarly company — those spirits who instruct in the sciences rather than command armies. His subjects are the mathematical disciplines that the medieval curriculum ranked highest, and the grimoire treats him as a rigorous and capable master of them.

Office

The Ars Goetia records that Andrealphus teaches perfectly geometry, and all things pertaining to measurement and dimension. He instructs likewise in astronomy, so that his pupil comes to understand the ordering of the heavens as well as the mensuration of the earth. In addition to this learning he can make a man subtle and cunning in these arts, and — in a curious flourish common to the catalogue — he is said to be able to transform a man into the likeness of a bird.
