He governs the spirits of Africa and rides where the sand meets the sea.
The Spirit
Cimejes — also written Kimaris, Cimeies, or Cymries — is the sixty-sixth spirit of the Ars Goetia and a Great Marquis. He appears as a valiant warrior mounted upon a strong black horse, a martial figure whose bearing suits his double office as teacher and commander. The manuscripts assign to him governance over the spirits of Africa, and in some readings over the whole of that continent's parts, so that he stands as a regional viceroy within the infernal order.
His character combines the scholar's competence with the soldier's authority. Like several of his neighbours he instructs in the liberal disciplines, but he also carries a peculiar talent for uncovering what is lost, and the tradition remembers him equally for his learning, his horsemanship, and his rule over lesser spirits.
Office
The Ars Goetia holds that Cimejes teaches grammar, logic, and rhetoric — the arts of the trivium — and gives perfect instruction in them. He discovers things that are lost or hidden and reveals the location of buried treasure. Beyond these gifts he makes a man into the likeness of a valiant soldier, and he rules over all the spirits of the parts of Africa, commanding them at the conjurer's behest. His office thus binds eloquence, recovery, and martial command in a single spirit.
