Dantalion

He wears the face of every man and woman, and reads the thought behind each one.

The Spirit

Dantalion is the seventy-first spirit of the Ars Goetia and a Great Duke, the last of the dukes and among the most singular figures in the catalogue. He appears in the form of a man with many faces — the countenances of all men and all women — and carries in his right hand a book, as though he were forever reading and comparing the innumerable expressions he bears. The image is one of the grimoire's most vivid: a shifting multiplicity of human faces gathered into a single spirit who studies them all.

His province is the mind itself — its thoughts, its inclinations, and its capacity to be changed. The tradition treats him as a master of psychology in the old sense, one who both perceives the secret contents of the heart and works to reshape them, and he is often numbered among the more powerful and comprehensive spirits of the seventy-two.

Office

The Ars Goetia records that Dantalion teaches all arts and sciences, and declares the secret counsel of any person, for he knows the thoughts of all men and women and can change them at his will. He can cause love and show the likeness of any person, wherever they may be, and show the same by a vision. His office thus unites teaching, mind-reading, and the alteration of thought and affection, making him a spirit of the inner life above all.
