He holds a serpent in his hand, and with it he drags the thief into the light.
The Spirit
Andromalius is the seventy-second and final spirit of the Ars Goetia, ranked a Mighty Earl. He appears in the form of a man holding a great serpent in his hand, and the image is one of stern justice: the serpent is the instrument by which he seizes the guilty and exposes the crooked. As the last entry in the catalogue he brings the sequence to a close on a note of retribution and recovery, a fitting counterweight to the deceivers and discord-sowers that precede him.
His character is that of an avenger and a restorer. Where many of the seventy-two traffic in ambiguous or dangerous gifts, Andromalius is directed against wickedness itself — the thief, the false dealer, the hidden villain — and the tradition treats him as a spirit whom the conjurer might summon in the cause of justice rather than mere advantage.
Office
The Ars Goetia holds that Andromalius brings back both a thief and the goods that were stolen, discovers all wickedness and underhanded dealing, and punishes thieves and other wicked people. He reveals hidden treasures and uncovers those who have wrought deceit, and he can detect the villainy and hidden dishonesty that surrounds the conjurer. His office is thus the whole work of exposure and redress — the finding of the lost, the unmasking of the false, and the chastisement of the guilty.
