A bull with the wings of a griffin, turning water into wine.
The Spirit
Haagenti is the forty-eighth spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great President who appears in the shape of a great bull bearing the wings of a griffin. As with the other higher spirits of the catalogue, the operator is counselled to command him into a human form, in which he becomes a lucid and willing teacher. His imagery — the bull, an ancient emblem of strength and transformation — suits a spirit whose chief work is the transmutation of one substance into another.
He is closely paired in tradition with the Duke Zagan, another spirit of alchemical change, and the two are sometimes discussed together as governors of transformation within the grimoire’s scheme.
Office
The Goetia says that Haagenti makes men wise, instructing them in every subject, and that he possesses the alchemist’s power to transmute metals — turning all base metal into gold. He also changes water into wine and wine into water, a set of transformations that echoes older accounts of miracle and of the alchemical opus. His office is thus one of wisdom joined to the mastery of matter, granting both learning and the capacity to alter the substance of the world.
