Uvall

A dromedary that takes a man’s shape and speaks the tongue of Egypt.

The Spirit

Uvall — variously spelled Vual, Voval, or Wall in the manuscripts — is the forty-seventh spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great Duke who first appears in the form of a mighty dromedary. When the operator commands it, the beast takes on human shape and speaks in the Egyptian tongue, though not perfectly. His archaic voice and camel-form mark him as one of the older, more distant-seeming spirits in the catalogue, an entity whose knowledge is bound up with the past.

Like several Goetic dukes, Uvall is chiefly concerned with the affairs of the heart and with the reconciliation of enemies, placing him among the spirits invoked for matters of love and social repair rather than destruction.

Office

The Goetia states that Uvall procures the love of women and stirs affection between people. He gives to the operator knowledge of things past, present, and to come, and he wins the friendship of former enemies, turning enmity into amity. His command of the Egyptian language and of ancient matters marks him as a spirit of memory as much as of desire, joining the erotic and the historical in a single set of gifts.
