Orobas

A horse that turns to a man, faithful to those who call and cruel to none.

The Spirit

Orobas is the fifty-fifth spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great Prince who first appears in the shape of a horse and, when commanded, puts on the form of a man. Among the spirits of the catalogue he holds a notable reputation for loyalty: the grimoire specifically praises him as faithful to the operator, neither tempting nor deceiving those who summon him, and standing as a protector against the deceptions of other spirits. This trustworthiness is unusual enough that the text singles it out, setting Orobas apart from the many spirits whose loyalty must be forced.

He is chiefly a spirit of divination and of favour, sought for the truth of his answers and for the standing he can secure.

Office

The Goetia records that Orobas gives true answers concerning things past, present, and to come, and concerning the divinity of God and the creation of the world. He procures dignities and prelacies — offices and honours — and wins the favour of both friends and enemies. Above all he defends the operator faithfully, guarding him from the temptations and lies of the spirits. His office thus joins reliable prophecy, worldly advancement, and protection into a single, notably benevolent commission.
