Phenex

A bird singing sweetly as a child, waiting twelve hundred years to fly home.

The Spirit

Phenex — also spelled Phoenix or Pheynix — is the thirty-seventh spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great Marquis who appears in the likeness of the mythic firebird whose name he bears, singing with the sweet voice of a child. The grimoires warn the operator not to be moved by this beautiful song, for it is a snare; the exorcist must command the spirit to lay it aside and take on human form before conversing with him. His character is that of the poet and singer, gentle in seeming, and among the more melodious of the infernal ranks.

Like Marchosias, Phenex carries the wistful hope of return. He told Solomon that he trusted to come back to the Seventh Throne after a thousand two hundred years — a hope the grimoire, in its characteristic manner, records without granting.

Office

The Goetia holds that Phenex is a marvellous teacher of all the wonderful sciences, an excellent poet who is ready and willing to perform the operator's requests. His office is bound to eloquence and learning, and he speaks with great skill of the arts and of poetry. He is obedient and forthcoming once his singing is set aside and his human shape assumed.
