“The wall falls before the resolute will.”
The Angel
Aniel is translated “the God of Virtues” or “God of the powers,” its stem gathering the sense of strength and hosted might, sealed with the suffix -el, “God.” It is a name of victorious will, of the courage that breaks through what bars its path, and it opens the sign of Libra at the point where the scales are first set to balance.
Ruling the first pentad of Libra, from zero to five degrees, Aniel governs the breaking of sieges and the winning of what has long resisted. Its classical office is to grant victory, to lift blockades whether of cities or of circumstance, and to reveal the hidden secrets of nature to the diligent seeker; it is counted an angel of the sciences and of resolute inquiry. The virtue it bestows is a strong and disciplined will — the boldness to persist against obstruction, the mental force to master difficult study, and the courage that does not mistake caution for wisdom. Under its influence what has held a person besieged, whether an outward enemy or an inward paralysis, is at last thrown open, and the mind is freed to advance. It is invoked by scholars, by those who feel trapped or blockaded in their affairs, and by any who must summon resolve to break a long deadlock. In the comparative scheme Aniel answers the Goetic marquis Phenex, a spirit of sweet song and poetry who hopes to return to heaven; where Phenex enchants with harmony, Aniel emboldens with force, and the two together mark the fine balance of Libra's opening degrees.
