The night-owl prince who names the stars and reckons the virtues of every plant.
The Spirit
Stolas — also written Stolos or Stolas — is the thirty-sixth spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great Prince who first appears in the form of a night raven or crowned owl before the operator, and who takes the shape of a man when so commanded. He is one of the scholarly and astronomical spirits of the catalogue, an emblem of nocturnal wisdom fitting to his owl-form, and among the more dignified figures of the hierarchy.
His association with the owl places him in a long lineage of birds of knowledge and augury, and the grimoires treat him as a teacher whose gifts lie in the natural and celestial sciences rather than in war or dominion. He is a spirit of quiet learning, called upon for the secrets of the sky and the earth alike.
Office
The Goetia says that Stolas teaches the art of astronomy and instructs the operator in the virtues of herbs and precious stones. His office joins the heavens and the ground: knowledge of the stars and their courses on the one hand, and the hidden properties of plants and gems on the other. He is thus a spirit of both the astronomer and the herbalist, keeper of correspondences between the celestial and the botanical.
