He gives account of the dead who perished in their sins.
The Spirit
Samigina — rendered also as Gamigin or Gamygyn — is the fourth spirit of the Ars Goetia and the first of its marquises. His name has passed through several corruptions in the manuscript tradition, and the two principal spellings sit side by side in modern editions without settling the question of an original form. He belongs among the spirits whose concern is with the dead and with the arts of learning, and the grimoire pairs these two offices in him with a certain scholarly gravity.
His remembered aspect is animal and shifting: a small horse or ass that changes, once the operator persists, into human form. The voice attributed to him is hoarse, a detail shared with several of the early spirits of the catalogue.
Office
The Goetia holds that Samigina teaches the liberal sciences and gives account of the souls of those who have died in sin. Summoned on behalf of the living, he is said to report on the state of the dead and to answer for spirits who lie under the sea. His office thus binds together the teaching of the arts and a necromantic commerce with the departed, making him a spirit consulted for learning and for word from beyond.
